Preparations for WorldSkills in 36 Countries

Author: Lantz Anders, Sweden

Anders LantzWorldSkills Sâo Paulo 2015 is not far away, and as the Chief Expert it’s a lot to do all since the CPW (competition preparation week) in February.

This year we have a new Technical description and also the largest amount of competitor ever (36 countries), and also more than 20 new experts, so there is huge work for me as the ”Skill manager” for this event. I have to be sure that every single detail will be in place before all Experts meet and do the final preparation on place in Brazil one week before the competition starts.

To my help I have the Deputy Chief Expert, Doug Warden from Canada and also three module team leaders with their assistants, and also a couple of ”old” experts that have roles as ESR (Expert with Special Responsibilities). All preparations that’s done and will be done until Sâo Paulo is done via WorldSkills discussion forum, where all experts have access to a lot of different topics.

The competitors have the actual competition tasks for the three modules Linux, Windows and Cisco environments for training since May 14th and on site in Brazil we then have to apply at least 30% changes on them.

We also have a new module this year ”Troubleshooting and secret challenges” that will be held for all on the last day of the competition.

The tasks here will be totally blind for the competitors and 50% of this will be a secret challenge made in Packet Tracer by Cisco!

In Sâo Paulo the will have a Hackaton style challenge also … wsdc2015.worldskills.org
A hackathon-style event where WorldSkills Champions and local technologists team up to solve real-world problems faced by Brazilian NGOs.

Looking forward to seeing YOU involved ….

NetRider representing Austria @WorldSkills in Sao Paulo 2015

BIM in Salzburg from 20. to 23. November 2014

On this fair visitors could learn about different professions by practically seeing what a certain profession stands for, what activities and task it comprises and what educational path you need to choose to become just that.

At the same time the National Competition in 15 professions were taking place and visitors could see young talents competing about who is the best of Austria. One of the professions was IT Network and Systems Administrator (Trade39). And this was our question:

Who is going to represent Austria at the WorldSkills 2015 in Sao Paulo?

15680260958_538a32e7eb_k

  1. Johannes Pinger, HTL Rennweg
  2. David Rieger, FH St.Pölten
  3. Philipp Adam, HTL Rennweg
  4. Florian Hermann, HTL Ungargasse

We congratulate all participants for their exceptional performance and motivation and Johannes Pinger from HTL Rennweg as the winner. It was an honor for me to personally meet you all. Again. I actually just meet Johannes on October 26 where he participated in the Cisco NetRiders competition.

Pb221851_kleinFor Johannes it is a start into an intense time of preparing for competing against the Nations best. A scary thing … that we will master. All of our support is yours, Johannes!

The Spirit of Skills Competitions

Everyone who has ever visited a skills competition knows that this is something special – it is like a virus.
A virus that should spread!

A two people team was able to organize that 15 professions had their National competitions at BIM, last year it was 8.  Extraordinary help is needed to be able to accomplish this:

  • 15 apprentices from ÖBB on duty for the Skills team
  • 2 teams of each 8 people from the Vocational School for carpenters in Wals were responsible for wooden construction of booths and installations needed
  • machines and material from numerous sponsors (Würth, Siemens, Emco, Cisco … )
  • exhibition ground funded by the Chamber of Commerce Salzburg
  • and many more hands …

It was possible to welcome 3 teams consisting of the contestant and the accompanying expert from Finland, Germany and Lichtenstein who used the competition as their training event. Cool !

And after the event everybody – contestants and experts – work together to pack everything and leave the place as empty as it was before.  Thank you to all contributors to make this learning experience available for so many people.

A real joint effort !

All about people
Report from Carsten Johnson
volunteers skill39volunteers WorldSkill Experts

WorldSkills is the bi-annual summit of vocational education and training. Like at the Olympic games national teams and more than 1000 participants compete with each other for gold medals. And it was a fascinating event. More than 200,000 visitors came to watch the 50+ competitions – among them 7 IT-related skills competitions.
Skill #39 is the NetAcad competition on IT Systems and Network Administration. 90 % of all competitors were NetAcad students. Asia led the top positions in the Skill #39 category, with Jason Soh from Singapore and Takuya Nishide from Japan taking home gold medals, and Hui-zhong Liu from Chinese Taipei with a bronze. A huge congratulation to the winners and all competitors who took place in the event! The best participant from the European Market region was Lukas Hubschmid from Switzerland (5th place). And: 2 out of three medal winners are active NetAcad students.

Industry partners of WorldSkills ran information booths in an area called “Discover Your Skill”. Young pupils from Germany and abroad received information about career chances in many professions. As the IT sector presenter Cisco took the responsibility to inform about the large variety of IT professions. The discover your skill booth was staffed with volunteers from a Networking Academy in Muelheim (an der Ruhr) in Germany. The Academy students did a great job in presenting the value of IT skills in interactive workshops on “Secure WLAN”, “Managing an Energy Grid” and ” Sports meet IT”. If you want to get some impressions on how the atmosphere at WorldSkills Leipzig was visit www.worldskillsleipzig2013.com or try out the facebook diary about the live at the information booth and in the competition area of Skill39 (IT Systems and Network Administration) at twitter under #ciscoatworldskills, on facebook: Networking Academy.

Cisco’s role as a sector presenter was made possible through a sponsorship of 70k from the budget of the German Public Sector team. Christian Korff is the executive sponsor from Cisco corporate.
During the WorldSkills event we can report a 1 on 1 meeting between the new country manager Oliver Tuszik and the Minister of Economic Affairs of Saxony, Steffen Morlok. Jackie Barker lead the Corporate affairs team and head many meetings with industry partners, gave presentations at international conferences and handed out the medals to the winner in skill #39. The Academy team was present with Bob Schoenherr, Julie Chrysler, Jutta Jerlich, Lourdes Nieto and Carsten Johnson.

Cisco Switzerland supports Swiss WorldSkills Contestant

Lukas Hubschmid is representing Switzerland at the WorldSkills in Leipzig in Juli 2013 in Trade 39 IT Network Engineering. He was selected in his trade at the ICT-Young Professional Award which was sponsored by the Cisco Networking Academy Switzerland. The award led Lukas to an invitation to the Cisco Connection, the yearly customer event of Cisco Switzerland, which took place in Baden. Here he could experience first-hand what Cisco products stand for and this is where the collaboration started: Andreas Moser, Country Manager Systems Engineering, met with Lukas and rewarded his efforts with the offer to support Lukas and his Swiss Expert Trainer Danny Meier in their training efforts.

Since the equipment list was issued, preparation for optimal training is underway. Not only is Cisco Switzerland opening its labs for allowing access to the equipment for Lukas, he will also be coached by Andreas Moser and his team of Systems Engineering experts themselves. This is not only great preparation for the competition in Leipzig but more so an extraordinary opportunity for his future professional career in IT.

Kick-off > Lift-off > Take-off …

From NetRiders participant to WorldSkills competitor to being an Expert in WorldSkills to starting your own company … one of the personal stories.

If you talk to someone who has been at one of the WorldSkills competitions, you will learn that their experience has effected their in a similar way. It affected mine.

Many of the competitors were Networking Academy Students or even NetRiders before, win the National Skills Competitions,  represent their countries on a global level, become expert after that and continue to support the Skills competitions in the years after that. Here is one of many examples:

Worldskill 2015 Team Sweden

Adrian Flodell with expert Andreas Strömgren

The Swedish Team
Adrian Flodell is a Networking Academy Student from Katrineholms Tekniska College
Andreas Strömgren competed at the WorldSkills 2007 in Shizuoka and already was the Swedish expert in Leipzig 2013.

NEW this Year

This year will be the largest competition ever, there are new technical description and a couple of new rules upon that. Many experienced experts will help the expert team to deal with all changes.

For the first time we are launching a pilot initiative to connect Cisco experts with competitors as they prepare for the competition in August.

Another new activity: a hackathon-style event where WorldSkills Champions and local technologists team up to solve real-world problems faced by Brazilian NGOs: 12-15 August, 2015 in São Paulo wsdc2015.worldskills.org

Cisco got really good learning materials for understanding Cisco’s devices and all the networking technology.
