Preparations for WorldSkills in 36 Countries

Author: Lantz Anders, Sweden

Anders LantzWorldSkills Sâo Paulo 2015 is not far away, and as the Chief Expert it’s a lot to do all since the CPW (competition preparation week) in February.

This year we have a new Technical description and also the largest amount of competitor ever (36 countries), and also more than 20 new experts, so there is huge work for me as the ”Skill manager” for this event. I have to be sure that every single detail will be in place before all Experts meet and do the final preparation on place in Brazil one week before the competition starts.

To my help I have the Deputy Chief Expert, Doug Warden from Canada and also three module team leaders with their assistants, and also a couple of ”old” experts that have roles as ESR (Expert with Special Responsibilities). All preparations that’s done and will be done until Sâo Paulo is done via WorldSkills discussion forum, where all experts have access to a lot of different topics.

The competitors have the actual competition tasks for the three modules Linux, Windows and Cisco environments for training since May 14th and on site in Brazil we then have to apply at least 30% changes on them.

We also have a new module this year ”Troubleshooting and secret challenges” that will be held for all on the last day of the competition.

The tasks here will be totally blind for the competitors and 50% of this will be a secret challenge made in Packet Tracer by Cisco!

In Sâo Paulo the will have a Hackaton style challenge also … wsdc2015.worldskills.org
A hackathon-style event where WorldSkills Champions and local technologists team up to solve real-world problems faced by Brazilian NGOs.

This Cisco Networking Academy (ASC and ITC as well) joined Cisco Networking Academy Program in 2000. Most of the students on this field trip are currently enrolled in either CCNA, ITE or IoE course. The professors aim to increase students’ exposures and understanding of Cisco’s technology to inspire them to further their study in networking and IT.

Bosse Lindborg:

The Cisco Campus was taking care of us very well. All of us were invited and the arrangement was fantastic. We were divided into three groups to see different parts of campus. Afterwards we were invited to a nice lunch.

Thanks to everyone who has made this visit to the Cisco campus possible and so impressive.

Why competitions are key for learners?

Technology in Action: Real World Learning

Real world examples for learning are essential. Especially when there is a complex context to understand. Additionally it gives you the possibility to learn how to work and interact in a professional environment.
At best this is in the form of company visits, project work, events or field excursions. Speaking to the people who actually work with the technology in the  specific setup is a very crucial part of the experience.

Therefore we focus on finding such hands on learning opportunities in Tech Industry and invite students and educator communities. Here is a unique opportunity

Cool Event: Wings for Life World Run

A Sports Application of the Internet-of-Everything Technology
#Worldrun #Netacad

Austrians have a lot of mountains, are good sportsmen and women (at least most of them), they produce great technology and innovative ideas. Many times it stays a secret. But this is changing. Slowly but steady. The best is that governments and administration do support  new ideas and their implementation now because it was understood that this is the only way a country can sustain itself in the long run. What result do you get? Smart ideas, startups and cool events …

Here comes the COOLEST Event ever, Made in Austria:

Smart Grid Dissemination Strategy Discussed

It is not an easy tasks to convince employers and employees from electrical engineering that they will need IT competences in the near future.

The roll out of a smart grid infrastructure will change the demand for combined electrical and IT skills dramatically. While the traditional qualification schemes does not include IP competences for electricians, we want to raise awareness for this need. As a result we expect a demand for training smart grid installers. They will find matching learning material on the Netspace platform of the Cisco Networking Academy soon.

The e-Skills week supported activities around smart grid content and will include an awaireness raising campaign and a serious of public conferences for small companies and employees in the electrical craft sector. Cisco and the further training institution BFE will join competences and forces to reach out to people with roots in the craft sector. During a planning meeting the marketing plan was discussed and two main conferences scheduled. Further coordination will happen during bi-weekly virtual meetings.
