Day 2: #CLHackathon Berlin

#CLEur #CLHackathon #benetacad @CiscoNetAcad

day2 hmm day2 gadgets day2

Inspiration : Ideation : Consolidation : Prototyping

On day II prototyping starts with opening the box and getting the gear out – sensors, arduinos, more sensors …

Theme: Urban Living - sharing and caring

I had the pleasure to get to know the teams and their projects. Here is a short glimpse into the IoE Solutions that are in the process of being born:

Layer 8

Layer 8

The team is creating a smart, cloud based pill dispenser that makes life easier for patients, doctors and insurances. Quite a challenging idea with a need for cooperation with different stakeholders. Challenging also for IT students who are in need of medical and mechanical knowledge for the implementing their project.

PlantNet

PlantNet

PlantNet

The solution being developed is a monitor for parameters critical to plant development and well-being. There are similar products on the market already but PlantNet will consist of a platform, an app and community where exchange of information as well as teaching and learning can happen. This taps into the urban gardening culture in Berlin where it is trendy for bankers to go to an after work gardening party.

The Fast for the Tourists

Smarter Transport Tasks Force

Smarter Transport Tasks Force

This application collects information about tourist locations and connects them through the interest and wish of tourist in your city. It should also have a function to determine capacity of the locations to distribute visitors in your city more efficiently. The business model is based on the win-win situation created for tourist locations, the city and the tourists.

NoPe (No Pollution)

Smart trash containers. But the team specialized on the particular situation of mobile installations, fairs, exhibitions and concerts where network connectivity, theft, vandalism plays a role. Through an integration with social media people who do clean up are being rewarded for their actions. This is something I would love to see on my next concert.

They are developing a system that is monitoring the number of people in transport unit for better distribution plus additional benefits for public transport operators, users and city governments.

All of the team members grew up in big cities and they hate to stand in traffic jams. Their application is aiming to optimize traffic in cities and they want to use sensors for real-time measurement of traffic movement.

Marc and Eugene Advice Before
Last Advice from Marc & Eugene – Hackathon moderators

Speaking with Marc and Eugene just before the official start

Jutta: Marc, you and Eugene have a lot of Hackathon experience between the two of you already. Were they all the same or can you explain us what was different?

Eugene: Yes, we did Hackathons in Milan, Helsinki, Brussels, Hamburg.  Every hackathon is different though – it is a one-of-a-kind event. The difference stems from the group of students you work with, the education system they come from, age difference, study focus. In some place participants worked more independently, in other there was more coaching from their instructor involved.

Marc: In Brussels for example, there was a large number of experts available and the participants were not only IT students but also came from business and design studies. This changes the dynamic a lot. A second point is that the theme varies because we want the theme to be locally significant which again influences everything.

Jutta: What would you say is the key element tell the participants to watch out for participants?

Marc and Eugene: Sure, here is our advice

  1. Collaboration is absolute key – not everybody knows everything but the knowledge of all people in the team is huge and will make the difference for your project
  2. Use your resources – the experts and the Internet are great resources for you whenever there is a questions
  3. The first idea is not always the best – look beyond the normal horizons and do not let your predefined thinking parameters limit your creativity

Be open to try a disruptive approach and follow hints from advisers and experts fostering thinking outside the box.

The last days before the NetAcad Hackathon in Berlin

#CLEur #CLHackathon #netacad

Logbook: These are the last days before the NetAcad Hackathon from 15. – 17.2.2016 at OSZ IMT in Berlin

See the world as it can be …  rather than as it is.

This is how you can describe the a Hackathon:

A group of young talents from OSZ IMT, G18 Hamburg and MMBbS Hannover decided to spend 3 days together to think about ideas and solutions, usually for a certain purposes, using their IT skills and competencies to create, shape, design and prototype solutions.

Osz_imt

Guided by experts from diverse disciplines following stations are ahead

  • Inspiration – brainstorming social challenges, identifying issues to solve
  • Ideation – understanding the problem to address, modelling ideas in teams
  • Consolidation – deep dive on the proposed solution with expert checkpoints
  • Prototyping – implement, tinker, adapt

It is great to part of the process when a group of people with an open mind take on this journey with all its highs and lows. These will be 3 days you will never forget … the results are always amazing.

The ideas will be presented – pitched – in front of more than 700 people, the visitors at the Cisco Live Academy Day on the 18.2.2016 at the CityCube Berlin.

We are looking forward to the starting signal !

Passion working @ IoE Hackathon

WP_20150126_010_x

It was really nice, interesting and exciting to meet and work with you at Talent Garden in Milan. Thanks for putting the passion into all you do.

I enjoy seeing and supporting ideas developing and how the parents of these ideas grow with them. After the Hackathon is actually not the end but the start of the next steps. There are projects and prototypes that developed out of initial ideas & visions and they want to be developed further.

Another very inspiring element was that we could connect and collaborate with a parallel Hackathon and the teams working in the Cisco Office Singapore.

Here is a brief insight into projects born in Milan – the descriptions are written by the project leads:

ToThemToThem would like to help guide you when you like to learn something new
Ilaria Vitali (leader), Gianfranco Emanuele Cerasuolo, Marco Messina, Mario Vitale, Yi Zhang

We designed a smart object that can be placed indoor in those contexts where it is easy to find people that are passionate about a topic and want to actively teach and learn from others. This totem can be used to connect people from different backgrounds and with different skills to physically make them share their knowledge. There are different knowledge fields: designing, programming, tinkering and marketing, and we assigned each one a color.  The prototype used 2 Raspberry Pi and an arduino, with connected 2 RGB leds, a mockup for a smartphone app was designed.

Black Cat Analytics improves presentations thanks to real (and soon, big) data.
Gleb Sapunenko (leader), Sydney Lukee, Gabriele Costantini

The team created an analogic prototype, based on Arduinos, Raspberry Pi and Spark, which allows to give feedback, informing the speaker in real time when a subject is not clear, without being obtrusive. The speaker can review later the presentation to find which topics were least understood, in order to know which topics to explain better. The target of our project are teachers and speakers that want to improve their presentations and lessons, both in universities, classes and conferences, for a better experience for all.

Screenshot 3

Edumotion aims to understand student’s feelings, moods and emotions to help solve problems
Giuseppe Agneti (leader), Federico Formenti, Mattia Scalvini, Christian Viscardi

Our prototype can recognize the face of students and understand the moods of the students thanks to a face tracking system, developed in python and running on a Raspberry Pi B+. Three LED’s shows the status: yellow for working machine, green for “good moods” and red for “bad personal situations”. The data collected create a “privacy feedback” visible only to students, which can choose to share their data to ask for help. The data collected is stored on a platform divided into two sections: a personal private area and a global area, where students with similar feedback can meet each other and can organize activities together.

We think that students are humans, not robots! And trying to understand their needs in this way will surely improve the way they will work tomorrow in the society.

Looking forward to continue to evolve with you …

Who is behind #MMBbSHack17

Interview with David Brett

David Brett MMBbSDavid is the driving force behind the MMBbS-Hackathon 2017. After participating in 4 #netacadde Hackathons, he was fully hooked and decided to run his own.  With the huge support and encouragement from Joachim Maiß and Joachim Kemmries from the MMBbS Hannover, it is already clear that more Hackathons will follow.

David and his colleague Andre Neumann used 6 months of solid preparation time which resulted in an extended 4-day Hackathon planned down to the last detail. ” … and therefore running very smoothly” says participating expert Jochen Berbuer, experienced in Hackathons himself.

It started on Monday 15.05.2017. Six teams identified
< Pollution > < City Security > < People > < Rubbish > < Shopping > < Traffic > as their group topics within the overall theme „Living in an Urban Environment“.

Analog and Digital

analog-digital

Working with others when you do not know them, their backgrounds and have never met

Today’s problems and issues are complex. To solve them we need to cross borders across professions, languages and cultures. There is no simple way. Technically this may seem easy. I agree. What many of us do not consider is that the users of technology are people. We need to work together!

Collaboration in a digital workplace requires us to learn how to work together without knowing what we understand with all our senses when we meet in person.

Developing ideas into solution requires critical thinking.

How do you tell someone that your idea, approach or solution might be a better choice without hurting this person’s feeling and then win them to build on existing ideas and knowledge together?

At the #3CityCreathon in Berlin, Bratislava and Rome participants were able to train this :

  • Selling your ideas in only 3 minutes – Elevator Pitches
  • Give feedback in a form that can be accepted
  • Digital communication between three cities

This combination between digital communication and analog collaboration developing an idea in teams is the digital workplace of the future present.

A perfect illustration for the eSkills conference in Bratislava where 200 policy makers, business leaders and experts discussed how digital technologies are transforming our lives at a pace never seen before.

Many thanks to all participants, organizers, decision makers, jury members, experts and our digital audience.

If the spark has reached you and you are eager to run a creathon or hackathon yourself, contact your local NetAcad contact.

Until next time

Inspirational Regards

Jutta

Prototyping in wonderful sunshine

Day 2 #Netacad Instructor prototyping at the #openBerlin Innovation Center

prototyping

At the instructor hackathon in Berlin, we have the most wonderful weather you can imagine. Still we have 3 project groups whereas each team consists of 5-6 people.

Today is the prototyping day and here are the problems and the proposed solutions selected during the initial phases the teams will design intelligent IoT solutions for.

Very curious about how the prototyps will look like …

traffic light

Problem: The green phase of a traffic light is not long enough for older people or for people with limited mobility.

Solution: A Sensor / App-Solution can influence the control in such a way that everyone has the required time to cross the street.

draussen

Problem: Lots of food is thrown out because too much was bought and they seem to be spoilt or are spoilt.

Solution: A sharing platform, where user can offer food available for pickup in the neighbourhood. With a link to a food blog or „Thermomix“ recipes with ideas on how to cook the food.

IMG-20160506-WA0022

Problem: People searching for parking spaces create a considerable part of inner city traffic.

Solution: a sensor / app soluton showing free parking spaces. People can reserve their parking spot before they get there for a fee.

Thanks to everyone investing their time, contributing their products and knowledge in this educator hackathon.

To be continued tomorrow … pitching day.

Reduced to the Max

Day 1 #Netacad Instructor Hackathon at the#openBerlin IoT center

IMG-20160506-WA0015The key qualifications for starting your career are not so easily defined any more as it used to be.
Sounds like a platitude. If you take the time to think, how our life today looks like compared to 20 years ago … it becomes quite clear that our society faces a huge unprecedented challenge.

Our reality changes to fast, affecting all generations. It has become almost impossible to stay on top of the information tsunami.

It is the task of our education systems, to prepare the future generations to enter their work life, for a future that we do not fully know yet.

How do you do this?

Typen

A Hackathon … a teaching and learning format that opens the door for understanding digital value creation processes, showcases the technology behind it and inspires everyone to be part of the solution.

Organizing and running a hackathon is quite complex and extensive. The best way to  learn how is always to experience it yourself.

Today the FIRST #hackathon for teachers / professors / instructors/ #educators started in Berlin.

This very condensed day took us through 3 (of the 5) hackathon phases:

Inspiration phase – Ideation phase – Consolidation Phase

It is not so easy to decide and choose which idea to work on or problem to solve.
We argued, discussed, asked experts, looked at our ideas from all different angles and viewpoints … do we have a project now?
